Return-to-work planning

A written plan that tells the doctor, the employer and the adjuster what a worker can do now, what the job asks and what comes next.

The plan is written by the physical therapist who has worked with the person, and it uses the job's own tasks and words.

This care may fit you if

  • A worker is ready to go back in steps

Light duty, a changed task or a shorter shift can be part of the plan.

  • An employer has modified duty to offer

We write what a worker can do in each role so you can place them.

  • A doctor needs the job in plain terms

A job analysis lists the physical demands, task by task.

  • An adjuster needs next steps in writing

A plan that says what comes next, who decides and when it is reviewed.

How a plan comes together

  • 01

Gather the job and the limits

We collect the job description and the doctor's limits, or write a job analysis from a walk-through.

  • 02

Match tasks to what the worker can do

The therapist sets each task beside the worker's current ability, from the visits and any test.

  • 03

    Write and review the plan

A plan for the doctor, the employer and the adjuster, reviewed as the worker progresses.

What shapes the plan

What decides the steps

The doctor's limits, how the worker progresses, what the employer can offer and what the claim authorizes. We update the plan when any of these change.

Who writes it

A licensed physical therapist writes and signs every plan, and talks it through with the worker first.

How it is paid for

Planning is usually part of the claim. For an employer who asks for job analyses, we agree the scope in writing first.

  • Chest pain, trouble breathing, a sudden severe headache or pain, new weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or a fall with a head injury needs emergency care now. Call 911.

Questions about return-to-work planning

Do you decide when someone goes back?

No. The doctor on the claim decides. We tell the doctor what the worker can do and what the job asks.

Can you write a plan without treating the worker?

Yes, with the worker's consent and the claim's authorization. A job analysis can stand on its own.

What if the employer has no light duty?

The plan says so, and it still lists what the worker can do so the doctor and adjuster can decide the next step.
