Functional testing
A measured test of what a worker can lift, carry, reach and hold, set against what the job asks, with a written report everyone can read.
A physical therapist runs the test, keeps the record and signs the report. We build it from the job description or a walk-through of the job.

This care may fit you if
A doctor wants to match restrictions to a job
The report shows what the worker did and what the job asks.
An employer needs to place someone
You need to know if a worker can do a role, or which parts they can do now.
A worker is near the end of care
A test near the end shows how the worker meets the job's demands.
An adjuster needs a clear record
A report that lists each task, how it went and what the therapist saw.
How a test runs
- 01
Interview and review
The therapist asks about the job and the doctor's limits, and reviews what we have on file.
- 02
The test
Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling, reaching, kneeling, climbing and holding, in the order and at the heights the job uses.
- 03
The report
A written report with each task, how it went and what the therapist saw, sent to the people the claim allows.
What shapes the test
What decides how long a test takes
The number of tasks, the doctor's limits and how the worker responds. We stop a task when it is not right to continue, and the report says so.
Who runs it
A licensed physical therapist runs and signs every test. We do not test for diagnoses; we measure what the worker does.
How it is paid for
An employer, adjuster or doctor usually orders a test, and we confirm who pays before we schedule it.
- Chest pain, trouble breathing, a sudden severe headache or pain, new weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or a fall with a head injury needs emergency care now. Call 911.
Questions about functional testing
Is a functional test the same as a medical exam?
No. A doctor examines and diagnoses. A functional test measures what a worker does on set tasks.
Can a worker refuse a task?
Yes. A worker can stop at any time, and the therapist records what happened and why.
Who gets the report?
The person who ordered it and the people the claim or release allows. We ask before we send it anywhere else.
